A backlink for a given web asset is a connection from some other site (the referrer) to that web asset (the referent). A web asset might be (for instance) a site, website page, or web index. A backlink is a reference equivalent to a reference. The amount, quality, and significance of backlinks for a website page are among the elements that web crawlers like Google assess so as to appraise how significant the page is. PageRank figures the score for each page dependent on how all the pages are associated among themselves, and is one of the factors that Google Search uses to decide how high a page ought to go in list items.
